Marvell Unveils Innovative Wireless Technologies To Accelerate Adoption Of New Dual Band 802.11a/g Products

Patent Pending Technology Raises Consumer Expectations for Fast, Simple, and Easy-to-Use Wireless Networks

Sunnyvale, California (October 26, 2004) – arvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, today announced a new family of 802.11a/g wireless devices with innovative, patent-pending features tailored for the digital home and office.  These include the unrivaled “AutoLink” technology, for one-click user configuration, “BoostMode” for doubling 54Mbps range and performance, and “FLEXMode” for simplified, concurrent a/g operation. These innovations were designed to simplify the “end user” experience, alleviate range and performance concerns, and accelerate the adoption of dual band 802.11a/g products.

“In order for wireless to be widely used by end users the WLAN products must be as easy to use as the common everyday appliance,” said Joe Byrne, Gartner Analyst.  “Consumers shouldn’t have to worry about whether a product is 802.11a or g compliant or whether or not it is set up with the latest security standards – this should all be transparent to the end user.”

The innovative features included in the new Marvell 802.11a/g product family enable ‘as is’ deployment – eliminating the expected hassles of complex setup and operation.  For example, the AutoLink feature is a quick and simple, one-click solution for setting up, configuring and enabling a secure WPA or WPA2 wireless network.  Once connected, users can enjoy the expanded freedom offered by the BoostMode technology, which increases throughput and allows up to twice the range of current 802.11a/g solutions.  FLEXMode technology is perhaps the most important innovation as it provides simultaneous 802.11a and 802.11g operation without the cost and complexity associated with today’s dual band Access Point (AP) solutions. By offering competitive and dynamically configurable bandwidth performance to 802.11a and 802.11g clients, the Marvell 802.11a/g solution has lower power and cost compared to static dual band APs.

“Marvell believes that to truly provide ubiquitous dual band connectivity, the product focus should be placed on features that matter the most to the end users,” stated Dr. James Chen, Marvell Product Marketing Manager for WLAN.  “The intelligence we have built into these WLAN devices demonstrates our drive to make dual band products more user friendly with better performance. We would like the user to use the WLAN network ‘as-is’ instead of worrying about its compatibilities or how to set it up correctly.  We will continue to innovate across our product portfolio as we strive to make WLAN products everyday devices for the end user.”

Availability

Marvell 802.11a/g chipsets and reference designs are currently sampling to select customers.  Marvell 802.11a/g product offerings include chipsets and reference designs for clients, such as PCI, Mini PCI, USB 2.0, as well as Access Points, and Home Gateways.  Marvell will also include these innovative features in all future 802.11a/g products.  Additionally, the AutoLink and BoostMode features are available as a software upgrade for all current 802.11g Marvell products.
