Marvell Launches Discovery V — Industry's Most Powerful System Controller

First Single Chip System Controller to Integrate DDR2, USB 2.0 and PCI-E Interfaces

Sunnyvale, California (October 11, 2005) – arvell®, (NASDAQ: MRVL), the leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, today launched Discovery V, the industry’s most powerful system controller for Power Architecture™ technology-based microprocessors.  The newest member of Marvell’s widely adopted Discovery family is optimized for a broad range of applications from sophisticated routers, switches and wireless base stations to high-volume storage and laser printer applications.  The Discovery V’s innovative feature-set has received broad support from the industry’s leading PowerPC processor vendors—Freescale Semiconductor and IBM.

"Freescale welcomes the Marvell Discovery V system controller because it allows us to leverage the high-performance processing power and MPX protocols of Freescale’s high-performance MPC7447A/7448A processors to improve overall system performance," said Jeff Timbs, Director of marketing for Freescale Semiconductor's Digital Systems Division. "Marvell and Freescale have a history of working together on complementary solutions that not only benefit our respective customers but drive new classes of products and applications.”

“Power Architecture technology embedded microprocessors offer superior performance, scalability, integration and power efficiency for demanding applications,” said Ron Martino, director of PPC Standard Products, IBM Systems & Technology Group.  “By pairing an IBM microprocessor with Marvell’s new Discovery V system controller, we are able to offer embedded system designers a robust solution for next-generation applications.”

Discovery V sets new benchmarks for performance and integration by incorporating an innovative cross-bar architecture, support for advanced communications peripherals, and performance-tuned interfaces.  Ideal for high performance and cost-sensitive applications, Discovery V is the industry’s first system controller to integrate a DDR2 interface, PCI-Express, USB 2.0 and multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports on a single chip. The on-chip, cross-bar fabric with any-to-any connectivity enables concurrent transactions among multiple units, resulting in very high system throughput, which allows system designers to build high-performance, scalable systems.

“With the launch of Discovery V, Marvell sees a huge opportunity for applications such as laser printers in markets like Asia, where our customers are seeing unprecedented growth,” said Dr. Paramesh Gopi, Marvell’s General Manager for the Embedded and Emerging Products Business Unit.  “Discovery V is the perfect product for our customers to capitalize on this market opportunity by addressing a wide range of high performance and cost-sensitive applications.”

Comprehensive Development Tools

Marvell offers complete development platforms for Discovery V, enabling customers to start system development without waiting for their own hardware.  Development platforms including the Freescale MPC7447A/7448A and IBM750FL/GL, will be available when Discovery V samples in Q1 2006.  Complete reference design platforms including software drivers and board support packages for VxWorks and Linux provide a complete tool chain for accelerated customer development.

About Marvell Discovery System Controllers

Since its launch in December 2000, the Discovery family of system controllers has been established as the market leaders with multiple design wins across a broad spectrum of tier one customers.  The Discovery V system controller integrates several I/O peripherals on-chip, including a DDR2 memory controller, a PowerPC CPU interface, Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-X and PCI-E bridges, storage functions, and a USB 2.0 interface. The Discovery V is software compatible with legacy Marvell Discovery system controllers, preserving the customer’s software investment while accelerating development cycles.
