New Reference Design Co-Developed With Cavium Networks Enables Centralized Management, Enhanced Security, Reduced Operation Cost, and Time-to-Market Advantage
Sunnyvale, California (April 20, 2004) –
Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, today announced the availability of a reference design co-developed with Cavium Networks, the security processor leader, for cost effective, enhanced security Enterprise Wireless LAN (WLAN) switches. The new Enterprise WLAN switch reference design addresses customer’s security, cost, integration, and manageability concerns. The new reference design from Marvell and Cavium solves these concerns while offering customers a way of differentiating their product offerings and getting to market quickly.
The Enterprise WLAN switch reference design is a full-featured solution with packet switching, protocol- and security – processing components required for an enhanced Enterprise WLAN switch. Incorporated into the design is Cavium’s market leading security processing component and Marvell’s award-winning Prestera switching- and protocol-packet processing components. The design offers 24 Fast Ethernet ports with 2 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) uplinks and delivers wire-speed Ethernet switching, routing and IPsec processing. Each port can be configured as wireless or wired allowing the end customer to aggregate their wired and wireless users into a single box. Enterprise WLAN switches based on the new reference design will support centralized management, enhanced security (encryption and authentication), bandwidth prioritization, radio power management and software updates. The Enterprise WLAN switch reference design offers a scalable architecture, from 1Gb to 10Gb speeds, hardware, and support for Linux and application software enabling customers to get their products to market quickly.
A key advantage of the Enterprise WLAN switch reference design is centralized control and management of Access Points (APs), which enables a reduction in complexity and cost of the AP device as well as the overall wireless network. Centralized management simplifies the network administrators job by enabling them to manage a single device, the new WLAN switch, rather than separately configuring all of their APs, which can equate to a dozen or more devices. The centralized management feature also enables easy detection of rogue APs and ad-hoc transmissions significantly enhancing the security of the WLAN. By using the new reference design customers have access to centralized management and enhanced security features that are necessary for broad deployment in the Enterprise WLAN market.
“Cavium Networks is already the leading choice for IPsec, SSL and WLAN security processing in WLAN switching equipment,” said Syed Ali, President and CEO of Cavium Networks. “With this new relationship with Marvell, we are excited to bring to our customers robust, scalable and integrated cost-effective designs that implement security, packet and protocol processing and switching functions at industry-leading price points. This will enable lower costs, faster time to market and greater software innovation for our OEM customers leading to accelerated WLAN deployment in the Enterprise.”
“Marvell is driving new levels of functionality in switches and design capabilities,” said Paul Valentine, Senior Director, Product Marketing, Enterprise Business Unit. “This reference design with Cavium exemplifies our commitment to bringing the right products to our customers and setting new expectations in the market.”
An additional benefit of using the Enterprise WLAN switch reference design is built in support for Marvell’s innovative, Virtual Cable Tester™ (VCT) cable diagnostic technology. VCT enables IT managers and end-users to quickly and remotely analyze the quality and attributes of the attached cable plant, helping pinpoint the cause of network cable malfunctions without deploying field support personnel or bringing down the network. VCT enables a significant reduction in installation time, cable debug efforts and overall network support cost for end-users.
The Enterprise WLAN switch reference design will be demonstrated in the Marvell booth # 1935 at the N+I Tradeshow in Las Vegas, May 11 - 13, 2004. Customers are encouraged to call Marvell prior to N+I to schedule a demonstration time during the show.
