Marvell Delivers Yukon™II, World’s First Dual-Port Gigabit Controller For PCI Express Server Platforms

Marvell to Demonstrate Innovative Yukon II Controller at the Intel Developer Forum

Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco, California (September 7, 2004) –

Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, today announced Yukon™ II, the industry’s first x4 PCI Express, dual-port Gigabit Ethernet controller for server platforms.  Marvell will demonstrate the Yukon II device at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, September 7 – 9, 2004.

The Yukon II controller is first among the next generation of server Ethernet controllers designed to deliver reliable multi-gigabit bandwidth for the scalable PCI-Express server architecture.  The Yukon II delivers network traffic to a server over dual Gigabit Ethernet links and across the server’s 4-lane wide PCI Express channel.  The Yukon II fully utilizes this 4-lane channel to enable wire speed 2Gigabit per second (Gbps) performance in each direction.

The Yukon-II controller is also designed to provide high server availability and reliable network connectivity with the controller’s dual-port link redundancy and teaming functionality.  The Yukon II controller features Marvell's innovative Virtual Cable Tester® (VCT) technology to enable IT managers to quickly identify cabling problems with pinpoint accuracy thus reducing the impact of cabling issues on network availability.

In addition, the Yukon II controller supports the Intelligent Peripheral Management Interface (IPMI) and Alert Specification Format (ASF) to provide IT managers with real-time server health monitoring and enhanced manageability. The Marvell Yukon II solution also simplifies deployment and IT management across a variety of computer platforms in an organization’s network by providing the industry’s most comprehensive software driver suite that includes support for Windows, Linux, Netware and Unix.

“Yukon-II is another highly innovative addition to Marvell’s family of Yukon Ethernet controllers” said David Young, Marvell’s General Manager, Connectivity Business Unit, Communications Business Group.  “The Yukon II controller leads the way in delivering on the PCI–Express promise for scalable performance and reliability in server platforms.”

“PCI Express provides the tremendous bandwidth required in server platforms to meet enterprises’ computing demands,” said Jim Pappas, director of Initiative Marketing, Intel Enterprise Platforms Group. “Marvell’s offering of the dual-port Yukon-II reflects the industry’s advancement to PCI Express technology to deliver this new standard for performance and reliability for servers.”

Availability

The Yukon II is also available in a pin-compatible single-port device option to enable a single motherboard layout with the same footprint for the dual-port (88E8062) or single-port (88E8061) Gigabit Ethernet option.  Both devices support Copper and Fiber interfaces. Marvell provides a complete Yukon II software driver suite and hardware reference design for fast time to market implementations.
