Marvell and Cree Expand Collaboration with New LED Lamp Joint Reference Design

A19 lamp reference design provides superior dimming capabilities and delivers higher lumen per watt and cost benefits for lighting OEMs and ODMs

Santa Clara, California and Las Vegas, Nevada (May 9, 2012) – Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL) today announced a new light emitting diode (LED) lamp joint reference design with Cree, Inc., furthering the companies’ ongoing collaboration to drive the mass adoption of LED lighting. The new A19 60-watt dimmable LED lamp reference design combines the Cree® XLamp® LEDs and Marvell® 88EM8183 deep-dimming TRIAC LED driver integrated circuit (IC), enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs) to offer the highest compatibility with existing dimmers. The new design delivers industry-leading deep dimming performance with system efficacy of more than 75 lumens per watt. The reference design also helps to drastically reduce LED light bulb costs and limit customer returns that are attributed to consumer dissatisfaction with the light’s dimming capabilities.

“Marvell’s collaboration with Cree has helped to advance solid state lighting. Working together, we provide complete LED solutions that allow OEMs and ODMs to deliver the most advanced capabilities and performance on the market,” said Kishore Manghnani, vice president of Green Technology Products Group at Marvell. “Our latest A19 lamp joint reference design, featuring Marvell’s innovative 88EM8183 driver IC, addresses the few remaining hurdles to mass consumer adoption of energy-efficient lighting – cost, dimming capability and light quality.”

“Cree and Marvell share a common objective – to drive the LED lighting revolution by improving everybody’s lighting experience. Our joint reference design, leveraging Cree’s latest XLamp XB-D LED and Marvell 's deep dimming 88EM8183 driver IC, enables retrofit applications like the A19 light bulb at the lowest lumen costs on the market,” said Mike Watson, Cree senior director of marketing, LED components. “Together, Cree and Marvell offer lighting OEMs and ODMs quick-to-market solutions for cost-effective, energy conscious lighting throughout the world.”

Key Reference Design Highlights
The jointly developed A19 60-watt equivalent LED lamp reference design is based on Cree’s latest XLamp XB-D LED and Marvell’s 88EM8183 deep dimming single stage AC/DC LED driver integrated circuit (IC), which allows for programmable deep dimming down to one percent and features the highest compatibility with all types of phase-cut dimmers including leading-edge (TRIAC), trailing-edge and special (smart) dimmers with the lowest component counts.

At Lightfair International 2012, the A19 reference design will be displayed in Cree’s booth (#130 at the Las Vegas Convention Center) and will be showcased in the Marvell suite from May 9 – 11. For more information about Marvell’s LED reference designs, visit www.marvell.com/green-technology.
