California State Assembly Honors Marvell Co-Founder Weili Dai with a "Breaking the Glass Ceiling" Award

Dai recognized as one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in the world alongside other distinguished woman leaders

Santa Clara, California (March 5, 2013) – Marvell today announced Weili Dai, Co-Founder of Marvell, is one of 11 remarkable California women recognized by the Legislative Women’s Caucus of the California State Assembly for breaking barriers in their respective fields. The “Breaking the Glass Ceiling” award, which honors Ms. Dai’s role in co-founding Marvell, was presented by Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, at a ceremony held yesterday in the California State Assembly Chambers.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to be recognized by the California State Assembly. As an immigrant from Shanghai to San Francisco knowing very little English, and now an entrepreneur, this recognition underscores the endless opportunities our great state and nation hold for all people to develop their natural talents and become leaders in the global economy,” said Weili Dai, Co-Founder of Marvell. “Today, the world has changed dramatically and many female pioneers have broken the traditional barriers to bring fairness and justice to our society. We have moved beyond the conventional roles of wives and mothers to also become leaders in every industry and arena. By nature, women bring different and complementary attributes to the world of business and technology – our own brand of passion, compassion and commitment to make the world a better, safer and fair place for all. Women are the glue that holds together strong companies, families and communities. I am committed to ensuring women and girls are given every opportunity to apply their gifts and become the next generation of leaders in technology, business, education and more.”

Ms. Dai is one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in the world today. A technology visionary, she is the only female co-founder of a global semiconductor company. Since Marvell’s start in 1995, she has helped the business grow to become one of the top semiconductor companies in the world. Ms. Dai’s business acumen, strategic thinking, product leadership, endless passion and personal network have contributed greatly to Marvell’s fast rise to success. Her close relationship with her customers and the foundation of trust shared with them has given her a strong reputation for professionalism and integrity throughout the technology industry.

Ms. Dai has become a driving force in expanding access to technology in the developing world and an ambassador of opportunity between the United States and China, particularly in the arenas of education and green technology. Ms. Dai is a powerful advocate for the better use of technology to improve the human condition. For her contributions to technology and society, Newsweek named Ms. Dai one of the “150 Women Who Shake the World.” CNN International recently profiled her for its Leading Women series, Leading the Female Tech Charge. Additionally, Forbes magazine listed Ms. Dai as one of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.”

Ms. Dai is a member of the executive committee for TechNet and Bay Area Council, she sits on the board of the disaster relief organization Give2Asia, and she was named to the prestigious Committee of 100, an organization representing the most influential Chinese Americans. Celebrated as a pillar of her company, family and community, Ms. Dai is the proud mother of two sons Christopher and Nicholas, who are electrical engineering graduate students and Ph.D. candidates at UC Berkeley.

“These amazing women have been pioneers in science, civil rights, the arts, education, our armed forces, our courts and our government,” said Assemblymember Lowenthal. “In each of our honorees, we see the best of the California spirit.”

Other honorees include Dr. Frances A. Arnold, Honorable Yvonne B. Burke, Laphonza Butler, Geena Davis, Maria Zoe Dunning, Mildred García, Sally J. Rogers, Jennifer Harris Trosper, Rosalind “Roz” Wyman and Associate Justice Kathryn Doi Todd.
